Reprogramming your subconscious mind might sound a little weird to you. I mean, we know we can reprogram our computers but minds, hm, not sure. But if you think about it for a second you will realize our brains are our computers. For decades we were taught we can’t do much about our brain and our genetics. It is how it is. Some people are more creative than others, some people are smarter, some are positive, some are negative. There are even morning people, night owls…and so on. You need to accept who you are, double down on your strengths and hide your weaknesses.

Right?

Wrong!

While most people think that everything that happens to us is set in stone, nothing could be further from the truth. Neuroscience teaches us that the brain is a very malleable organ. Modern science experiments discover what some of the ancient gurus and books telling us for centuries: you can reprogram the subconscious mind. You can even change neural connections and thought patterns you thought you are stuck with. Today we know our experiences and our thoughts have a huge impact on our brain, its structure, and established pathways.

Reprogramming your subconscious mind is not sci-fi

The human brain is a mysterious thing. It can do things that make us wonder if we’ve been transported into the world of The Matrix. And we’re discovering new things about it all the time. Around 86 billion neurons live in your brain. Imagine that for a second. The whole Earth has around 9 billion people in total. Scientists used to think that the brain stops creating new neurons shortly after birth, but now we know that’s not true. The brain has a remarkable ability to rewire itself and even create new neurons—a concept called neuroplasticity.

Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to modify, change, and adapt both structure and function throughout life and in response to experience. Simply stated, the more you use a certain part of your brain, the stronger and more efficient that part of your brain becomes. The more you use some neurons pathway the stronger they get. And those you don’t use anymore fade away.

Sound simple, right? Then why it is so difficult to change ourselves? If the only thing we need to do is to use one neural circuit instead of another then why we don’t do that?

The problem is in our subconscious mind. We do not know, or better to say, we are not aware of the programs running in our subconscious mind. And, some researchers claim 95% of our thoughts are subconscious.

What is the subconscious mind?

We already compared our brains with computers. So, if we go one step further, we can compare the subconscious mind with an operating system that powers the computer. Our thoughts, our beliefs, everything is inside that black box we don’t see. All we see are products of the operating system.

Your mind generates 100,000 thoughts each day (yes, you read that right). How many of those you are aware of? How many of them did you choose to think? According to some researches only a few thousand. Don’t get me wrong here. Our brain’s ability to operate below our awareness threshold is a great thing. We are faced with thousands of different stimuli in and around our environment, and we can’t possibly decide what’s important or what to do about it. So, our brain makes the decision for us. It saves us a lot of time and energy. Imagine that you need to think every time you want to inhale or exhale.

Don’t change actions, change mindset

Sometimes we want to change things we don’t like, actions we do or outcomes we get in life. We feel stuck in life and we want to improve. So, the first thing we want to do is of course to change our actions. You know every self-help guru will tell you actions are the key.

Yes, but

do not change what you do before first changing why you do it. Remember. actions are just byproducts of our beliefs system and subconscious mind. You need to reprogram your subconscious mind first. You need to change the seed in order to get different fruit. Trying to make apple juice from the orange tree will make you miserable.

This is the main reason the New Years’ resolution doesn’t last long for most people. They suddenly decide they want to go to the gym. Great! They just decided to change their action. What they forgot is to change their mindset, their belief system, their subconscious mind. They still believe fitness is not for them, it is too difficult, you need to train hard to see any changes, eat only salad, spend a lot of money, sacrifice too much, the already tried but failed..and so on. But they decided to try. Then, one earčy morning after a few days, their subconscious mint tell them: this is too hard, fitness is not for you. And they agree.

So, if there is only one thing you need to remember from this part is this: reprogram your subconscious mind first, then you can start with changing your actions. If you try to do it another way around you will fail.

How to reprogram your subconscious mind- 4 step process

Now, if you are still with me and you read carefully you will probably have one logical question: How to reprogram my subconscious mind if I am not aware of it?

Great question. The subconscious mind is…subconscious, so our first goal is to make it conscious. I can tell you from my own experience about two powerful ways to do it. One is more systematic and long-term, and another one is for those in a hurry. Both will be described in detail in step two. But in order to come there, we need to have a plan. We need to set our goals.

1. Set your goals

First, you need to set your goals. Ask yourself what you want to achieve. You don’t need to know how you are going to do that. Allow the Universe some space for creation and believe in the divine energy that will guide you. You probably heard about setting S.M.A.R.T goals. But I want you to set your goals not just to be specific, measurable, or time-based. What is more important from my own experience is to set goals that are emotion-based. What does that mean is, goals you set need to spark the emotion inside you. Emotion is a key ingredient in any successful goal setting. If your goal is something you don’t like to do, but still want, like getting six-packs but you hate going to the gym, then you need to find a way to make it more enjoyable. Maybe you can present it as a challenge, maybe do it without a gym, maybe find a partner with whom you will compete… Whatever, but emotions should be there.

2. Make subconscious mind conscious.

Now, it is the most important step. We need to analyze ourselves and try to find out what is wrong with our program, our subconscious mind that holds us back. Why we didn’t achieve those goals from the first step already? We had a desire, but we couldn’t. Something is wrong with our belief system or thought pattern. We need to uncover it and change it. As I mentioned before, there are two ways to do it.

a) Meditation

When most people think about meditation they think about sitting down (in a strange pose) without thinking. That’s why most people give up on meditation. They close their eyes and thoughts keep coming like a bee swarm. They are trying to shut them down but they can’t. So, they give up. What you need to do is to exact opposite. You need to resist the urge to block any of those thoughts. Meditation is the art of doing nothing. You just need to become aware of your thoughts, look at them but not attach yourself to them.

Meditation is the best way to raise awareness about the thought patterns we have. Meditation will give you the ability to catch your thoughts, not just during the meditation but anytime. And by catching your thoughts you will discover a dark place of your subconscious mind. All those negative thoughts, limiting beliefs that were hidden behind the subconscious mind will become visible. From there, you can change them. More about how to change them is on step three.

b) Negative Belief Assessment

Another way to identify your negative beliefs is much quicker than meditation. Meditation is a long-term game and I recommend it to anyone. Negative Belief Assessment is the method I discovered for myself and it is a great shortcut for those who want to quickly find out about their negative beliefs. In this method, you are presented with 200+ negative beliefs from different aspects of life. All you need to do is to read it one by one and honestly check those that apply to you. You will probably discover more than a few statements that you agree with and never thought about them as negative beliefs.

3. Repeat affirmations

The third step is when we are starting to use the knowledge we now have about brain neuroplasticity and our ability to change our brain. We need to make it our slave, not our master. He is there to serve us, not another way around. It is our time to tell our brain how to operate. It is time to tell our brain a different story. Stories were made specifically to overcome the negative beliefs we discovered in the previous step. The good thing about the brain is it doesn’t know what is real and what isn’t. If you think about something happening, if you visualize it, and if you feel emotions like it is happening, our brain will think that is happening. That is a great thing. And we are going to use it.

It is time for positive affirmations. For most of you, this method might sound crazy. It was for me as well. Telling yourself something that isn’t true yet is a little weird. The real question is; what is true anyway? For each of us, the world looks different. And the truth is something you believe in. If you are just repeating random positive affirmations from the internet don’t expect much. If there are no emotions and faith involved you are wasting your time.

In order to be effective positive affirmations need to:

  • be personalized to overcome your negative beliefs
  • be authentic to your level of conciouness
  • include emotions and faith

Once you have them you need consistency. You told yourself one story for 20,30 years. Do not expect your brain will accept another one in the next 7 days. Fifteen minutes a day is more than enough, but be consistent and do not lose faith. You will see a tremendous change in your life.

4. Build new habits

Have you ever noticed that if you try to quit smoking, your mind drifts back to cigarettes? You remember all the times you smoked, and it feels so similar to what your life is like now, but with a cigarette. Often times after one puff it triggers a chain reaction — where you light up again. This is because cigarettes are wired in your brain. It’s not just a physical dependence on nicotine either – it goes deeper than that. Your subconscious mind creates the thoughts and cravings for cigarettes automatically. So, what we did in step 3 is we cut off the connection between our thought pattern and cigarettes,

But, critics will say affirmations are just the words, they are useless if there is no action behind them? You should learn until now you can’t have action from the different frequencies of your thoughts. There will be actions but from different, new frequencies. First, you need to change the frequency on the radio, only then you can hear a new song. Once you start to create new thought patterns you can start to build a new habit that is coherent with a new pattern. If you want to learn more about different techniques you can use to create a new habit then I can recommend James Clear as one of the best authors out there.

Conclusion: Is it possible to reprogram your subconcious mind?

Thinking you can’t make a change is the easiest way to stay stuck. New scientific experiments confirm our brain is capable to change at any age. Our subconscious mind is our operating system and by reprogramming it we can change our actions. We are failing because we are trying to do it another way around. Tune yourself with a new frequency and your actions will be coherent with that frequency.

So, my answer is YES! You can reprogram your subconscious mind. Have faith and courage and start your journey today.
